CISI GFC — Global Financial Compliance

The compliance officer's international baseline. 200 calibrated MCQs, 5 walkthroughs + cram sheet + audio, mock exams. £49.

What is the CISI GFC exam?

Global Financial Compliance is CISI's international-compliance foundation qualification. It's the exam most compliance-officer job descriptions expect — the broad baseline that covers:

100 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours, 70% pass mark. Delivered computer-based via Pearson VUE. Universally recognised across UK, EU, UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong for compliance and risk roles.

Who should sit GFC?

RoleWhy GFC helps
Compliance officer (general)The default credential for international compliance roles
Compliance analyst / associateBroad grounding across every compliance domain
Risk professionalCh 5 (GRC) covers the risk-management operating model
Internal auditGovernance + three lines of defence + supervisory expectations
Regulatory operationsMiFID II venues, FATCA/CRS, extraterritorial reach mechanics
Career-switcher into complianceUniversally-recognised entry credential for compliance
Working in financial crime specifically? GFC is the general baseline. For AML/CFT depth (POCA, FATF Recs by number, PEPs, SARs) you'll want CFC alongside — most compliance careers benefit from both. The Compliance Officer Pack bundles them at £79.

Syllabus at a glance — 5 chapters, 100 exam questions

ChTopicExam weight
1International Regulatory Environment — objectives, models, extraterritorial reach, venues, international bodies20 / 100 (~20%)
2The Compliance Function — the heaviest chapter — role, remit, operating model, MMoU, cross-border24 / 100 (~24%)
3Managing the Regulatory Relationship — supervisor engagement, thematic reviews, s.166 skilled-person reports20 / 100 (~20%)
4Ethics, Integrity and Fairness — Consumer Duty, vulnerable customers, professional ethics frameworks19 / 100 (~19%)
5Governance, Risk Management and Compliance (GRC) — board, three lines, operational resilience, culture17 / 100 (~17%)

Full GFC bank — 200 Qs, walkthroughs, audio, cram sheet — £49 one-time.

A realistic study plan (5-7 weeks part-time)

  1. Week 1 — Ch 1 (International Regulatory Environment). Read walkthrough, do 30 Qs. This chapter is 20% of the exam — take it seriously.
  2. Week 2 — Ch 2 (Compliance Function) — the heaviest chapter (24%). Read + do 40 Qs.
  3. Week 3 — Ch 3 (Regulatory Relationship) + Ch 4 (Ethics). Read + 30 Qs each.
  4. Week 4 — Ch 5 (GRC). Read + 30 Qs. Return to weak spots from Ch 1-4.
  5. Week 5 — First timed mock exam (100 Qs, 2 hrs — brutal but essential). Review every incorrect answer. Second mock end of week.
  6. Week 6 (optional) — Third mock. Print the cram sheet. Sit the real exam.

Target: 80%+ across three timed mocks before booking. GFC's breadth means you can't just cram one section — spread the revision.

FAQ

How long does GFC take to prepare for?

5-7 weeks at 8-10 hours per week is typical. GFC is broader than CFC — no single chapter dominates — so revision needs to spread across all 5 chapters rather than focusing on one.

What's the exam format?

100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours. 70% pass mark. Delivered computer-based via Pearson VUE. Results usually available immediately after submission.

Which is harder — GFC or CFC?

They test differently. GFC is broader (governance, ethics, international regulators, compliance operating model) but shallower per topic. CFC is narrower (AML/CFT specifically) but deeper. Most candidates find GFC's memorisation load (regulator acronyms, article numbers, framework details) heavier; CFC's operational depth on CDD/EDD/PEPs can be trickier without prior compliance experience.

Is GFC accepted for UK SMCR / senior manager roles?

GFC is not a licensing exam — it's a competence credential. It signals to employers + supervisors that you understand the compliance framework. Whether it satisfies specific SMCR competence requirements depends on your firm's own accreditation matrix. Check with your compliance team.

Does GFC cover UK-specific regulation?

GFC is internationally-scoped by design. UK content features but so does US, EU, and international-standard-setter material. If you need UK-specific depth (PRA + FCA supervisory approach in detail), supplement with regulator publications alongside.
