What is the CISI ICWIM exam?

The International Certificate in Wealth & Investment Management is CISI's foundation qualification for anyone working — or wanting to work — in wealth management, private banking, financial advisory or investment services. It's designed to be internationally portable: same exam, same syllabus, whether you sit it in London, Dubai, Singapore or Hong Kong.

The syllabus covers everything a wealth-management professional needs to know at foundation level:

100 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours, 70% pass mark, computer-based via Pearson VUE.

Syllabus at a glance — 8 chapters, 100 exam questions

ChTopicExam weight
1Financial Services Industry — structure, participants, regulatory framework~10%
2Economics — macro indicators, monetary + fiscal policy, business cycles~12%
3Financial Markets — heaviest chapter — equities, bonds, derivatives, corporate actions, FX, commodities~20%
4Investment Products — funds, ETFs, structured products, alternatives~12%
5Portfolio Construction — MPT, asset allocation, benchmarking~10%
6Investment Strategy for Private Clients — objectives, constraints, tax~12%
7Suitability + Client Care — KYC, vulnerability, ongoing service~12%
8Pensions + Retirement Planning — UK pension landscape, decumulation~12%

Ch 3 (Financial Markets) is the heaviest chapter and full of numerical traps (flat yield, GRY, corporate actions, options mechanics). Most ICWIM candidates who fail cite Ch 3 as the culprit — worth over-investing revision time here.

What's inside the FinStudyHub ICWIM bank

The numerical chapters matter. Ch 3 (markets) and Ch 6 (private client strategy — capital gains, income tax, allowance thresholds) hide most of the fail-worthy detail. Our calculator-practice mode drills exactly these.

A realistic study plan (6-8 weeks part-time)

  1. Week 1 — Ch 1 + Ch 2 (industry + economics). Read + 30 Qs each.
  2. Weeks 2-3 — Ch 3 (markets) — spend two full weeks here. Read + 60 Qs. Use calculator mode heavily.
  3. Week 4 — Ch 4 (products) + Ch 5 (portfolio construction). Read + 30 Qs each.
  4. Week 5 — Ch 6 (strategy) + Ch 7 (suitability) + Ch 8 (pensions). Read + 30 Qs each.
  5. Week 6 — First timed mock (100 Qs, 2 hrs). Review + re-read weak-spot walkthroughs. Second mock end of week.
  6. Week 7 (optional) — Third mock. Print the cram sheet. Sit the real exam.

Target 80%+ across three timed mocks before booking. Ch 3 is the make-or-break — if you're below 75% in Ch 3 drills, don't book yet.

FAQ

How long does ICWIM take to prepare for?

6-8 weeks at 8-10 hours per week is typical. ICWIM is one of CISI's larger foundation qualifications — 8 chapters, 100 exam questions in 2 hours. Ch 3 (financial markets) alone often takes 2 weeks.

Is ICWIM harder than IISI?

Yes, materially. IISI is the entry-level introduction; ICWIM is the wealth-management foundation with deeper coverage of markets, calculations, and portfolio construction. Candidates who've done IISI find ICWIM easier — the vocabulary carries over.

Do I need ICWIM to become a wealth manager?

ICWIM (or an equivalent international qualification) is the standard credential many wealth-management firms expect at entry level. For senior roles you'll also want CISI Diploma units, CFA, or equivalents.

Is ICWIM part of the UAE Cat 5 licence?

Yes — you need both ICWIM and UAE FRR to satisfy the UAE SCA Category 5 licence requirements. Bundled in our Cat 5 Pack at £79.

Does the exam use UK-specific tax rules?

Ch 6 (Private Client Strategy) and Ch 8 (Pensions) use UK tax + pension law as the primary examples but the general principles apply internationally. Non-UK candidates should focus on the concepts + why (not memorising the exact UK numbers, which change annually).
