CISI GSO — Global Securities Operations

The specialist qualification for settlement, custody and asset-servicing professionals. 200 calibrated MCQs across all 5 chapters, £49.

What is the CISI GSO exam?

Global Securities Operations is the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment's specialist qualification covering what happens after a trade is agreed: how securities are held, cleared, settled and serviced across markets. It follows a holding through custody chains, central securities depositories, corporate actions, tax and operational risk.

It's the natural pick for anyone whose day-to-day involves:

50 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour, computer-based. This bank is built on the current edition (Edition 21, syllabus v20). Check CISI's own site for the latest exam details before you book.

Who should sit GSO?

RoleWhy GSO helps
Settlement / clearing operationsCh 2 covers the trade cycle, matching, CCPs and netting, DvP, settlement periods, buy-ins and settlement discipline
Custody / asset servicingCh 3 is the heaviest chapter — corporate actions, proxy voting, safeguarding client assets, nominees, fees and securities lending
Relationship manager at a custodianCh 1 covers global, regional and local custodians, custody agreements, SLAs and the RFI/RFP process
Investment or fund operationsCh 1 and Ch 3 cover how managers, brokers, custodians and depositories interact
Operational risk / controlsCh 5 covers operational, settlement and systemic risk, Basel, subcustodian review and assurance reports
Tax and withholding operationsCh 4 covers withholding tax, double taxation treaties, FATCA and CRS, and UK securities taxation
New to the industry? GSO assumes some familiarity with how securities trade. If you're brand new, IISI is a gentler starting point.
UAE-based? The UAE Capital Market Authority's licensing chart pairs the UAE FRR exam with a second qualification by job function. For investment operations manager roles, that second exam is GSO. Check the current CMA guidance for your specific role.

What's inside the FinStudyHub GSO bank

The full £49 GSO product covers:

Chapter walkthroughs and a cram sheet are included. Five chapter walkthroughs cover every syllabus area with concept boxes, exam-trap flags, worked calculations (netting, corporate actions, custody fees, tax) and quick checks, plus a one-page cram sheet. Audio narration is not available for GSO yet.
Tax figures are year-specific. Chapter 4 questions use the UK rates and allowances stated in the current workbook (2025-26). Rates change with each Budget, so check the figures against CISI's current syllabus before you sit.
MCQ length parity. Every question uses similar-length options across all four choices — no "guess the longest answer is correct" pattern. You'll actually have to read the question. This is a common flaw in cheap MCQ prep that we've deliberately audited out.

A realistic study plan (4-6 weeks part-time)

Assuming 8-10 hours a week alongside a full-time job:

  1. Week 1 — Ch 1 (main industry participants). 40 practice Qs.
  2. Week 2 — Ch 2 (settlement characteristics). Learn the settlement-period table and DvP models. 35 Qs.
  3. Week 3-4 — Ch 3 (other investor services — the heaviest chapter). Do the corporate-action calculations by hand until they're automatic. 60 Qs.
  4. Week 4-5 — Ch 4 (taxation) + Ch 5 (risk). 40 Qs.
  5. Week 5-6 — First timed mock exam. Review every incorrect answer. Second mock a few days later; third before sitting.

Aim to average 80%+ across timed mocks before booking. If you can't hit that, you're not ready — better to delay a fortnight than fail and re-sit.
